B.I.A. Members Corner

General Meetings take place during the months of September to June, the second Tuesday of each month 8-9am at Thorold City Hall on Schmon Parkway. Place:  Committee Rm. 1.

We invite all BIA members to join us whenever they can. If you cannot attend, please ensure you are on the email contact list to receive meeting minutes, so you know what you may have missed. We encourage all members to stay current on downtown happenings.

If you would like to request to be a delegation or have a presentation for a meeting, please contact the Coordinator well in advance and submit an outline about what you wish to discuss. The board will then have time to review the week before the general meeting at the board meeting. Presentations should be no longer than 10 minutes in length. Also, if you have ‘other business’ to include in the agenda please notify in advance.

Important issues for Members:

Large garbage items: please adhere to disposal regulations. Tenants and landlords must dispose of large items at landfill sites, or by calling private removal companies like “just junk”.

Business owners and operators may call the Niagara Regional Waste Information line at 905-356-4141 between the hours of 8:00-4:30 Mon-Fri. Waste removal is a ‘regional’ matter, and they will handle your concerns.

If you have large items lying around that do not belong to you, the region will send out a regional by-law officer to resolve the issue in a timely manner.

Commercial establishments and mixed use buildings do not currently qualify for the call-in curb side collection of large household items and appliances.

Winter Sidewalks: Please be advised that BIA businesses are responsible for their own snow and ice removal.

Sidewalk Maintenance: Our Cleaner works Monday and Friday 7-12am, 1-2pm. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 7-11am and 1-2pm. He does not work weekends. Responsibilities include the removal of small garbage items on municipal property within the BIA. Cigarette remnants should be the disposed of properly by individual businesses. Animal and yard waste are not the responsibility of the Cleaner.

Street Parking: Parking on the street is intended for patrons, and enforced by city by law officials.

For further information about this program, please contact: City of Thorold, Planning and Building Services, 905-227-6613 ext. 248, Email: jbernardi@thorold.com

We appreciate your continuing input, involvement and support to make our downtown be the best it can be. You can take part by promoting your business, our downtown, by volunteering in the community and helping with BIA events. We also encourage businesses to enhance the downtown by making cosmetic changes and adding heritage touches to their front facade.

The Facade Improvement Grant Program is intended to assist and encourage commercial owners / tenants to improve and / or restore building facades only within the Downtown Thorold area.  By providing financial incentives to property owners / tenants, the program seeks to stimulate private sector investment in the revitalization of existing commercial building facades in the Downtown Thorold area.

While explicitly focussing on facade improvements to the building elevations, it also encourages owners / tenants to perform other non-funded improvements such as structural and weather / waterproofing repairs that may be required to maintain overall building integrity.
